Claire's birthday and her age as I write her
So, perhaps unsurprisingly, Heroes canon was pretty inconsistent when it comes to some of the details. Claire's birthday is kind of a point of contention with regards to this.
According to different "canon" sources, her birthday is either, like, January 1991 or could be as early as March 1989 or 1990. Heroes couldn't decide, apparently. The general consensus is that she was fifteen or sixteen in season one. For my portrayal of Claire, I go with sixteen. I split the difference and chose July 30, 1990 for her birthday as that's somewhere in the middle of the dates canon provided. On a later rewatch I felt somewhat vindicated in this decision because her class ring in season one appears to be set with a ruby, the birthstone for July. Now, this is probably just a coincidence from the costume department, but AFIAK people do generally choose their birthstone for their class ring. I'm going with that.
The timeline in general is kind of shaky, especially with all the future AUs and flashbacks they did in later seasons. But my general estimation is that she starts out in season one at 16, and by the end of season four, she's around 18 or 19. And as I write her I've incorporated this canon uncertainty as a plot point - she was believed to be dead as an infant, so it's entirely possible that Claire had a different birth certificate when she was with her biomom, and when the Company gave her to the Bennets, a new one was made for her. Her original birth record would probably have listed her name as Claire Gordon.
I headcanon that some point the discrepancy is found, and Claire's like "whatever, I'll pick my own birthday" because in-universe she has avenues to have documentation made to back up whatever she wants. She doesn't know exactly how old she is, and any age she gives in a modern/contemporary timeline setting is gonna potentially be off by a little. In future AUs where she's lived a long time, it may very well be her best estimate, or she's lying.
If we're going 1:1 and things are taking place in 2025, she'll be turning 35, but when I get into threads, there's always a vibe to me that it's some unknown random modern time, lol. I don't tend to assume it's taking place in real time. By default I generally make her around 25ish, six years or so after the end of the OG series. I'm definitely interested in writing her in her 30s and older tho.
I just figured I'd write a little something about my thoughts on it since tomorrow is her headcanon birthday. :3
